In my opinion, this is a good thing. I think the inscription as it exists now distorts King's thoughts. Yes, the monument will be "scared" because the granite will have to be altered, but you can't leave an error like this unaddressed. PFN

WASHINGTON — The National Park Service announced plans Friday to remove an inscription from the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial and replace it with a full quotation from the civil rights leader — a move the memorial project’s architect said would “destroy” the monument.

Critics including the poet Maya Angelou, had said the paraphrase didn’t accurately reflect King’s words. It reads, “I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness.”

Michael Nagle for The New York TimesThe Ellis Island Immigration Museum is expanding its scope to include all immigrants, not just who arrived on the island.

Officials of Ellis Island estimate that as many as one in three Americans can trace their ancestry to immigrants who landed there from overseas.

Now, the officials are focusing on the other roughly 200 million newcomers who arrived in the United States before Ellis Island opened its doors or after it stopped becoming a portal for immigrants. The national historic site in New York Harbor is halfway through a transformation into a more inclusive National Museum of Immigration.

“The Ellis story is a finite story; American immigration is continuing,” said David Luchsinger, the National Park Service superintendent who oversees the island and the Statue of Liberty.

And Stephen A. Briganti, president of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, said, “If we didn’t tell the current story we would be obsolete in 25 years.”

Obscuring a Muslim Name, and an American’s Sacrifice

He was buried after the Sept. 11 attacks with full honors from the New York Police Department, and proclaimed a hero by the city’s police commissioner. He is cited by name in the Patriot Act as an example of Muslim-American valor.

And Representative Keith Ellison of Minnesota, one of two Muslim members of Congress, was brought to tears during a Congressional hearing in March while describing how the man, a Pakistani-American from Queens, had wrongly been suspected of involvement in the attacks, before he was lionized as a young police cadet who had died trying to save lives.

Despite this history, Mohammad Salman Hamdani is nowhere to be found in the long list of fallen first responders at the National September 11 Memorial in Lower Manhattan.

Tax Photographs
In c. 1939, New York City photographed every building in the city - this is an invaluable record. To find a building’s photo, you will need the block and lot number. A black index book on the table near the center of the room will include reference numbers to the microfilm (the book contains numbers only for Manhattan; the index information for other boroughs is on microfilm). With the reference number (it will look something like “D-1365”), go to the microfilm drawer on the north wall of the main room and search for the roll. The section of the film containing your index number will include numerous tax photos all individually identified by block and lot. Prints can be ordered by filling out a Tax Photo Order Form. Note that these were utilitarian images and not art photos so the quality varies – also some of the negatives deteriorated prior to their rediscovery and preservation. The quality of printed images is generally poor. You can, if you desire, order an image for $30.00.

(Reuters) - Curators are making hard choices at the museum memorializing the September 11, 2001 attacks at the site of the World Trade Center's toppled twin towers, aiming to convey the horror of the event without trespassing into ghoulishness.

"We're not here to traumatize our visitors," said Alice Greenwald, director of New York's 9/11 Memorial Museum that is due to open in its underground home at the Ground Zero site next year on the 11th anniversary of the attacks.

I have been asked a question about the weekly journal. The writer asked:

"For the weekly journal entires...do you want us to write about all of the readings for the week or just one? I'm trying to get ahead on the readings and journals, but I was unsure if we had to write about all of them or just one per week. Thanks!"

I replied:

"Good question.

Think of these journals as your notes. What do you *need* notes on? (Always keeping in mind that there is a final exam about the readings at the end of the semester.)

I imagine that you would want to make some comment about each one of the readings. But, you know what a journal is; it is a highly personal thing, a tool for your own use.

Therefore you get to make the decision. You can comment on one especially significant reading, or more than one, as you think is appropriate.

I was asked to provide a little guidance for writing a review of an historial exhibition and/or a memorial. I think both can be organized around a few guiding questions. Remember that your reviews are supposed to be only 3-5 pages long.

Possible outline for writing a review of a memorial or historical exhibition

I. Introduction.
II. Theme. What is the purpose of the memorial/exhibition?
III. Method. How was the thing organized/built to achieve that purpose?
IV. Assessment. What is your critical assessment? Did it succeed?
V. Meaning. For a moment, forget about the intention of the designer/curator. What does the exhibit/memorial really say/mean?

A good exhibition review should address most of the following points. Please consider the specific questions listed under each item to be suggestions rather than edicts. In other words, use your good judgment in adapting this model to the assignment.

WHAT STORY IS THE CURATOR TRYING TO TELL?
1. Include a brief description and summary of the exhibition's theme or subject. What is the thesis or message of the exhibition?

2. What do you think is the purpose or goal of the exhibition? What is the museum trying to accomplish with it?

HOW HAS THE CURATOR ORGANIZED THE EXHIBIT TO ACCOMPLISH THE PURPOSE?

1. What is the method of the exhibition, i.e. what kinds of artifacts make up the exhibition and how are they used to tell the story the museum wants to tell?

2. How are the artifacts displayed? Can you understand what they are and how they function as evidence to support the theme of the exhibition? Is there a sufficient number or variety of artifacts to support the theme? Are the artifacts displayed so that you get a sense of their historical context? Do the artifacts selected document a sense of change over time (should they)?

3. How is the exhibit organized? What is the logic of its organization? Why are the artifacts arranged just so? How do you enter or leave the exhibit (does it matter)? Is the exhibit in the form of a historical narrative? Is it thematic? Is it topical? Is it artifact driven? Are the artifacts ordered so that they demonstrate causality or motivation in human history?

4. What kinds of exhibition techniques have been used? In other words, what are the "constructed" aspects of the exhibition? Are there labels for the artifacts? What kinds of information do they convey? Are there audio-visual components or interactive displays? In what kinds of display cases or sets are the artifacts displayed? What kind of technical artistry has been employed in creating the exhibit?

WHAT IS YOUR CRITICAL ASSESSMENT OF THE EXHIBIT?

1. Does the exhibit tell the story the curator intends to tell? Is this an effective exhibit?

2. What are its strengths and weaknesses? What are the confusing parts (and why)? What are the enjoyable parts (and why)? Does any part of the exhibit make a point in a particularly dramatic or delightful way? Does any part of the exhibit cause you to lose interest?

3. Is the method effective? Are the artifacts chosen appropriate to the topic or theme? Do they convince you of the exhibit's message?

4. How effective are the constructed aspects of the exhibition? Can you read and understand the labels? Do the audio-visual segments communicate clearly? Do you understand the purpose of the interactive components? Did you learn from them? Does the exhibit create a "world" that tells an effective story?

5. Are there any biases or hidden agendas in the exhibit? Be suspicious! Who has underwritten the exhibit? Do you detect any biases in the story being told? Does the exhibit suggest that only certain kinds of artifacts are valuable to our culture? Does it suggest that only certain topics or subjects of history are important? Does it embody any "historical fallacies"?

WHAT IS YOUR INTERPRETATION OF THE EXHIBIT?

1. What is your summary judgment of the exhibition? What did it mean for you? What is its importance (did it teach you something? was it entertaining? did it exemplify "how not to do a museum exhibit")?

2. What does the exhibition communicate about American society or culture? Did you learn anything about American history? Did the exhibition convey a message relevant to contemporary American society? Did you gain any insight about yourself? about the characteristics of American culture?

3. Evaluate the exhibit as a cultural artifact in its own right. What are the cultural implications of the exhibit? What does it reveal about the values and priorities of the museum? about the values and priorities of American culture-at-large?
